When Kats Imai started Madam with Stephane K in 1996, the scene haven't suddenly arrived for him yet. Being ahead of the time doesn't always pay off, but for Madam, his talent, vision, and professionalism over the years have finally made them one of the hottest production teams in the world.
Kats Imai has been making tough, dark and bumping house music since 1996 with his partner Stephane K., fueled by the potent combination of Kats' obsession with poly-rhythms and Stephane's love of ambient sounds. From their very first remix - 'Town Near You' by Evelyn Jean - the pair have had the full respect and attention of key New York house DJ's, and their first original track, 'Deep Kemical' was a Danny Tenaglia favorite.
It's a classic story: Kats, already a promising DJ with a residency in Philadelphia in 94’-met Stephane- then playing bass in a hardcore band - at the Sound Factory in '94 when Kats noticed there was one other guy who would lose it to the same tunes he did. They got to talking (between good tracks, of course). This is how Kats Imai got involved making records under Madam ever since.
Things really took off for Madam in 2000 when their original track 'Penetration' got snapped up by Satoshi Tomiie's label Saw Recordings and provided the single most explosive moment on John Digweed's Global Underground: Los Angeles compilation. Now with more than just New York listening, the team is already fielding remix requests from all over the world. They have reworked on Dan Robbins 'Chanting In The Dark' (well-known as the opener from Steve Lawler's Nu Breed) for Junior Boys Own (UK).
And Kats Imai started to being recognized as one of upcoming next generation djs. He has played an incredible 7-hour set filling in for Danny Tenaglia at the Tunnel in 1999. Kats Imai said “ I’m driven by “Soul” in music. He even made a trip to Trinidad (a small Caribbean island/a home of soul calypso and steel drums) in 1999 to seach his future direction in production and djing. Listen to Kats’ dj set. Finally, Kats Imai created his new team with Chris Lowman (aka Eddie Styles) in 2001. Their first single called ‘You’re my…(everything)’ is signed with Twisted America (a well respected dance label in New York). Also has licensed to Satoshi Tomiie’s upcoming Nu Breed. He is about to redefining the sound of New York Deep House in many ways.
In 2002 Kats continues on his co-operation with Chris and they produce together another great tracks “Like No Other” and “2 BE ME ” set to be released on Twisted America. They also remixe track “Tribal Function” licensed to Tony Thomas’ upcoming new mix CD.
Kats keeps his worldwide DJ top position by spinning with names as SATOSHI TOMIIE, DANNY TENAGLIA, JOSH WINK, DAVE ANGEL, LEXICON AVENUE, TIGERHOOK, JOHN CREAMER, PEACE DIVISION, DIFFERENT GEAR and many others at most famous clubs in USA, Japan and Europe.
